Halloween
In our house Halloween is a big event. I am not sure how it became such a big event, but boy did it! Even before we had kids (or an excuse) my husband and I would celebrate this holiday that neither of us grew up really getting into.
We do a few things at our house, and I want to share them with you in case you want to do any of them in yours!
1. Spooky Dinners
First and foremost we do something that we call Spooky dinners. This used to be a joke where we would find some Pinterest dinners that were Halloween themed and try our take on them. They would usually turn out as what we like to call our “Pinterest Fails” which was a huge part of the fun. We would sit there looking at pictures later laughing at what we created and how cute or horrible they turned out. We had so much fun that we continued this as a tradition. Now each year it seems to get bigger and better. My in laws even usually join in and make their takes on “Spooky” foods too and we have a mini party! Now that we have kids they get a kick out of each and every thing that we make and LOVE eating them as well.
Some of my favorite “Spooky Dinner” items that we have made over the years are;
-Caprese “Eyes”
-“Spider” Donuts
-“Spider” Bread Bowl
-“Mummy” Brownies
-“Mummy” Cookies
-“Skeleton” Veggie Tray
-“Pumpkin” Cake
-“Spider Web” Soup
-“Spooky Tacos
-“Frankenstein” Guacamole and Chips
-“Eyes on a Log”
-“Spider” Deviled Eggs
-“Mummy” Hot Dogs
-“Spooky” Enchiladas
-“Caldron” Dip
-“Spider Web” 7 Layer Dip
-“Spooky” Fruit and Veggie Tray
-“Sick” Pumpkin
-“Mummy” Sweet Peppers
“Pumpkin” Mac and Cheese
-“Snake” Breadsticks
-“Octopus” Dip
-“Spiderweb” Dip
-Jalapeno “Mummies”
2. Costumes
Each year we dress up as a family (dogs included). I know that there are only so many years I can get away with doing this, so I have taken advantage of this the best I can. Fingers crossed that I can get the kids to agree on something again this year!
Some of the things we have been as a family over the years are;
-2017-Little Mermaid
-2018-Fiesta Party
2019-Toy Story
2020-Peppa Pig
2021-The Simpsons
Anyone have any suggestions for our costumes this year?
3. Scavenger Hunt
This has become a family favorite around our house. My kids LOVE this. Every year we do a scavenger hunt. This started when they were too young to even trick or treat, and then the pandemic helped keep it going, and now I can’t see ever stopping it!
We use clues that take the kids to different stops. At each stop there are pieces of candy for the kids with another clue to the next spot where they will find another clue and treat.
At the end/final stop I typically give them something special (like a Halloween themed book, or something else themed Halloween), but you could do this however you want! If you wanted to you could just leave the clues and put candy at the very end. It is totally customizable. For a link to your very own Halloween Scavenger Hunt Printables CLICK HERE.
4. Decorate!
Nothing gets you in the Halloween Spirit more than decorating! We love to decorate the house with Fall items, and for Halloween we add a lot of cute items.
A couple things you could do or use to decorate are;
